Ride and Housing Board

This action is bringing people together from across America. Because of the overwhelming response, we’re offering this space to coordinate ride and housing shares for the demonstration

Post in the comments below if you want to offer or request either a ride or housing. Please remember to include your email address so that folks can get in contact with you.

HOUSING UPDATE: St. Stephen’s Church has graciously offered some space for people coming for the action from August 19th to the 27th, and then on September 1st through 3rd. This will be an open room with space to sleep on the floor, and they ask for donation of $4 per night per person. If you would like to use this space, please click here to let us know.

TRANSIT UPDATE: The No Tar Sands Caravan has over 30 confirmed caravaners, and a route and itinerary has been set and needs you on board! There’s still space available for you on the Caravan to DC in California, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Lincoln, NE, St Louis, MO, Columbus, OH, Pittsburgh, PA and points in between! There is a southwestern contingent beginning in Tuscon, AZ and going through New Mexico and Kansas to meet up with the main caravan in St Louis, MO, you can join them too! http://notarsandscaravan.org/

Hello all. We are five hearty women in our 50s and 60s who are traveling by train from Portland, Oregon to participate in the tar sands action. We will arrive on August 27th, and plan to leave for home on the 31st. We live together in a cohousing ecovillage (www.columbiaecovillage.org) and see this as a way to take our sustainability commitments to a new level. As you might imagine, we are highly cooperative and responsible.

We prefer to stay together, if possible, and preferably near public transportation.

    Thanks!

  • Bill Cook

Hello. I’m coming in from MT. 39, male, returning college student. I plan to participate with events on Aug. 20th through Aug. 24th. (Classes start soon after that.)

It looks like Bismarck, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Akron are on my route. I have room for one more, or I can park my truck in your drive and take a seat in your vehicle. We can split traveling expenses forward of that point.

My truck sleeps one comfortably. (Campershell.) If I end up not using it though, I would appreciate accommodations for housing.

    Thanks.

Hi Bill, I didn’t think I would be able to go because I couldn’t take that much time off work. But August 20th – 24th would be a reasonable amount of time to go out there. I am trying to organize a benefit party in Minneapolis in order to raise money, which I would use toward my travel expenses OR donate directly to Tar Sands Action or a local Minneapolis group that needs money to fund their trip to DC.

I do not own or have access to a car but if I can get together the money to fund travel expenses, I would love a ride out to DC and back to Minneapolis if you still have room. I haven’t yet made contacts to find a place to sleep out in DC but I have relatives not far outside the city proper whom I can contact.

Please let me know what you might anticipate in terms of gas and other expenses (approximations), and if you have room in your truck still. Thank you for posting!

      Sincerely,
      Marianne Baum

Our community house and urban farm in southeast DC has a guest room with two beds in it. We can host two people who don’t mind sharing a room, for up to one week.

There are fans in the room but no air conditioning, and we have two cats.

Email Nathan at nbharrington@yahoo.com if you are intersted.

      • Sara_Schedler

I’ll be on the Vineyard when I leave for DC! Leaving 8/22 — when are you leaving? Are you driving? I don’t have a car– was going to take a bus or train. My name is Sara: Sara_Schedler@yahoo.com, (510) 384-4954. Thanks!

Hello! I’m planning to leave Boston on 8/22, returning on Sept 3rd. I don’t know if the dates work, but if they do, let me know! Sara_Schedler@yahoo.com, (510) 384-4954.

    • Jhollister

I am planning on heading down from Boston – dates are pretty flexible, but I’d like to stay as long as I can. Do you have a car? I don’t, but I’d be happy to share costs, driving shifts, ect.

  • Samuelavery

I will be coming to DC for this action with 6 or 8 other people from Louisville KY. We are a committed, friendly, fun-loving group of men and women in our 50s and 60s, and would much rather sleep on a floor somewhere than waste money on a motel room. A church, gym, or large living room will do. We will bring sleeping bags and food, and do not insist on bathing facilities, though will gladly accept them. (You may insist we do). We’re thinking about the Aug 27 to 31 time frame, but this could change. Thanks!

Have I talked with you yet? I’m coming about that time, from Cleveland. (Have to be at my mother’s 90th birthday on the 24th) and have a place fo the weekends – as a 63 y.o. woman formerly from Bloomington IN, I’d love to connect with a group like yours and your timetable is similar to mine though I’m staying to the end.
I could wait and ride in with you, or just connect later. (If we already talked, oh well oops)

  • Jack Basile

    Hello,

My name is Jack Basile. I am a reporter with the Lancaster Alternative Press, and a small publication called ‘The Local Act’. I am from Lancaster, PA. I, along with 4 to 8 other individuals will be coming down to DC for the duration. I will be reporting on this event with 1 or 2 photographers. The others will be taking part in the demonstration. I am looking for a place for some/all of us to stay. We will be happy to share expenses and we can get food for your place of residence.

This will be a group of mainly males, however there will be at LEAST one female in the group. We are all courteous and respectful, and some of us live in community houses up here in PA, so we know the rules and etiquette of living with others.

A place to stay for any or all of the demonstration would be awesome. Even if you have a back yard, most of us have tents that we can pitch.

We all thank you in advance for your help.
    Jack

  • Dianne Rhodes

I am Dianne in my 60′s coming from Saskatchewan Canada and I am seeking lodging – nothing fancy. I will be flying and need a bed (of sorts) for about 5 days starting about Aug 25 th.

Any accommodation or sharing would be great.

    • Louise

      Hello Dianne,

My schedule is still in flux, but I think I could offer you a place to stay. I’ll be out of town just before you plan to arrive, but should have my exact dates nailed down shortly.

I’m a woman, 64, have a guest bedroom. My condo is in Arlington, Virginia on a subway line. Also, I’m a total neophyte in these things.

Let me know if you still need a place.

I have a studio apartment in Takoma Park, which is a short walk from the Takoma red line Metro. This is about 25 minutes from the White House by Metro. It’s nothing fancy, but a cozy place to rest your head. I have one cot-thing that is comfortable enough – and floor space for sleeping bags and/or an inflatable bed, etc. Tell me a bit about yourself if interested.

      dear dandelion greens–
i’m planning to take the train (or possibly ride-share) from NYC on the 20th and leave on the 22nd or 23rd (heading to Boston or Cape Cod). I may have another place to stay in DC, but not definite yet (and not on metro)…I’m a (quiet!) singer/songwriter/ and plan to observe my 65th birthday sitting in on the 21st.

      Randino

I am planning on being in DC from Aug 25 and return August 28. Travelling from Cleveland, OH. Might drive, but might also need a ride. A couch or soft floor would be appreciated. Male, 62 years old.

      • Shodo Spring

        Hi Randino,
I just read this – sorry. Am bussing to Columbus August 26 to join the caravan. Hope to see you there.

    • John Clark

I’m quite glad to see two others coming from the Cleveland area! I’m looking to attend the action between 08-20 and 08-28, so it doesn’t look like our travel plans are compatible, but I’m flexible with the start of that interval, if some Clevelanders or other Ohioans want to try to arrange something.

I’m somewhat older than you, nonsmoker, believe our planet is sacred but beyond that an atheist. I am NOT happy to sleep outdoors or on floors anymore. So I want to share motel or hotel room. I only see guys who want to do this. Would you be interested?

      • Tamarin50

I’m looking for riders from NE Ohio. Plan to leave 8/18 and return 8/21. Also looking to cost-share lodging for those nites. Carol Skinner tamarin50@yahoo.com

      • Shodo Spring

Thanks, I am looking for free space and think I have some. But it’s a nice thought. Hope you have found something. Sorry I didn’t reply before – missing a lot of info.

    • Tamarin50

I’m leaving from NE Ohio (Chesterland) on 8/18 and will be at the event 8/19 (training?) and 8/20, and possible 8/21 depending on legalities. If your schedule allows I can give you a ride. Female, 65, nonsmoker, no religion. Carol @ tamarin50@yahoo.com

      • Shodo Spring

Thanks Carol. Just read this. Timing is wrong – I won’t even be in Ohio by then, but have found a ride.

JJ, I haven’t gotten enough responses to justify getting a nice room … too great of an expense to foot the bill myself. I did find hiwashingtondc.org through some friends I lobbied with a couple months ago. If you book online, the price is as low as $35, but there is a 3 day cancellation policy

Booking over the phone, the $35 rate goes up to $40 … for 6-, 8- and 10-person rooms, and the cancellation policy is <4pm day of arrival, no charge.

Since I will have a few free days with friends of friends, I booked over the phone and got a 4-person room for $45 … easy out when I need to.

Hi, Sara. I’m re-thinking this somewhat. I might be able to leave as early as the 22nd. But I doubt I’d stay till September 3. I plan to arrive on August 22nd and stay through until the end– Sept. 3rd. I of course was planning to stay at multiple places not to burden one person since I’ll be in DC for about 10 days, but do you have availability / space anytime from Aug 23rd-Sept 3rd? And are you near public transit, hopefully the metro?

Here is my contact info: Sara_Schedler@yahoo.com and my cell is (510) 384-4954.

      Thank you so much Michael,

Any luck on the ride situation? I’m in northeastern SD…just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Keep me posted if you come up with something!

      • Danielzellman

        Hey Cindy and Jessica,

This is Daniel, from Austin, also looking for transport, and you two seem to be about the closest of anyone I’ve seen on here so far. Maybe we could all meet in KS City, MO…?

        • JessicaLynnAvery

Hey Cindy and Daniel! Sorry for they delayed response. Have you have any luck on the ride front yet? Are you still interested in carpooling? I’ve never been to Kansas City, so why not start now?! Drop me an email at jessicalynnavery@yahoo.com, or give me a jingle at (605) 472-0326 if you are still wanting for carpool…getting excited! Peace!

There are several hotels in the DC area that advertise their ecological commitment. If these hotels were to offer special rates [e.g., government rates] for participants in the tar sands event, making the trip to DC would become a real possibility for many of us. With shared rooms, such rates wouldn’t be prohibitive. In considering the hotels to approach with this offer, proximity to public transportation would be major factor.

    • Sara_Schedler

      Roadrunner,

Hello– my name is Sara Schedler. I’m coming for the protests from August 22nd to Sept 3rd. I think this is a great idea– to get a group rate for hotel rooms. I’ve never done that sort of thing– do you have ideas for who would need to approach the hotel? Do we just need critical mass and then get in touch with the hotel manager? At any rate, keep me in the loop: Sara_Schedler@yahoo.com, (510) 384-4954. Thanks!
      Sara

      • roadrunner

        Good morning, Sara,

Good questions. From my brief experience (arranging reduced rates for a family wedding party), a critical mass is indeed required. And more — a deposit [would probably be significant money] to cover no-shows.

I’ll send an email to Bill McKibbon/the organizing team to see if they could provide the deposit and conduct the necessary negotiations in DC. In selecting the hotels to approach, it would also be good to know where the one-day training sessions will be.

        Stay tuned, Roadrunner

        • Ecantarow

I’d be interested in the group rate, too. Please let me know. I’m very flexible about dates. I’d planned to come around the 27th and leave around the 31st. But possibly a shorter stay. Part of this for me is getting to know people who are willing to put their bodies on the line (oops, unintentional pun) and feel as fed up as I do about the vile corporations doing this.

Roadrunner- check out this great resource the Washington Peace Center has on cheap housing for activists in DC!

Maybe you can organize something like this? I bet a bunch of folks would join in on this if you led it!

Hoping to stay at a Hostel/Bed and Breakfast near bus/train lines that can connect me to us to the action center. Any suggestions? We of course would like to book early.

I am looking for any sort of cross country ride. I will be in Portland on the 17th of August and heading east from there. I am considering bus/train but would love to carpool with someone at least partway. If your headed eastward within that time-frame and want someone to share driving/gas expenses let me know! I dont take up a lot of space, I have no criminal record, and I have a drivers license. Thanks!

    • Vince

I could get you there, Will, but you’d have to find your own way back, as I intend to stay to the bitter end!

      • Ecantarow

Do you mean you’ll be coming the 20th and leaving September 3?

      • Susan

        Hi Vince,

I read that you’re going to stay for the whole thing. I am thinking of doing the same thing. But, I wanted to know if you knew what it will be like there meaning – is it going to be like a quickie walk up to the fence, get arrested, and everyone leaves, every day for 10 days, meaning like the whole thing will last one or two hours per day? OR will there be a rally every day or a demonstration in addition to the protests that lasts for hours every day? If it is just one or two hours per day, then I am not sure it is worth it to be there every day. Do they have a plan for what people who aren’t getting arrested are doing every day?

Thanks for any info you have,
        Susan

I was also looking for a ride from Tucson, AZ. Willing to split any cost. The 18th to the 22nd would be the best time for me too. I can be contacted: bohemianouveau07@hotmail.com

Not sure if you are already plugged in to this – but the Rising Tide Climate Convergence is happening in St. Louis a few days prior. I think a bunch of folks from there are coming to DC, and you could likely organize a caravan. http://convergence2011.org/

      • http://kaitembird.wordpress.com/ Kait Mauro

I’ll be at convergence and was hoping there would be an organized trip down to DC afterwards — would we all be coming back the same day though, or do you think people should think about finding their own ways back to STL?

Love the camping idea! Any luck as of yet? I can’t afford a snazzy hotel, and would prefer a tent anyway. Keep me posted!

    • Thompson0692

I found something online called Cherry Hill Park – RV and tent camping, cabins, and yurts. They claim to have the closest RV park and campground to Washington, D.C. They say they have hourly bus rides to the Metro. I was going to call and see what kind of availability they have for the week of 8/25.

  • Jack Basile

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Jack Basile, and I am a reporter with the Lancaster Alternative Press and a publication called ‘The Local Act’. We are arriving in DC on or very close to the 15th of August, and will be there for the entire three weeks. There are 4 of us that will be down for the entire event, and one other person that will be coming and going for a few days here and there.

We will help with some money to help with any expenses, and can also offer some food if you would like.

I hope that we can work something out.

    Thanks.

    Hey there,

I’ll be driving from Durham, NC either late 8/25 or early 8/26 and coming back late on 8/28. Right now, have at least 2 seats in my car. Let me know if you are coming from the Triangle as well, and would like a ride.

    Cheers,

I myself am useless with computers and so forth – but isn’t there someone who can help Tar Sands Action organize this ride board geographically and by room/ride/date? Who’s got time to scroll through all the messages to find one that is relevant?

I’m planning to take the train from NJ to go to DC 8/1 – 9/2 if anyone has a place I could stay!

  • Jason&Alex-Boulder-CO

Jason and Alex are travelling from Boulder, CO on 8/23. We would arrive in DC early 8/25.
We plan on leaving DC on 8/29.
Anyone wish to share this ride? Probably will rent a car for the trip.
We are also looking for a place to stay. The HI-DC hostel has room for $40/night. Before I make a reservation I want to try posting here first.

Hey Jason&Alex! I would like to head out from northeastern South Dakota. If you could get in this region, I could drive. Thoughts? I haven’t really looked into rooms, but there are a few places that are willing to put folks up for free, and have started looking at places through the Washington Peace Center. I am cool to sleep on the floor, a couch, or outside…wherever my head lands is cool with me. If you’re interested, drop me an email (jessicalynnavery@yahoo.com) or give me a jingle (605) 472-0326. Peace!

  • Ildiko Polony

Hello everyone! My name is Ildiko. We are working on organizing a Caravan from San Francisco to DC. Ideally we will start with a veggie bus from San Francisco and then head east stopping in Salt Lake City and other major cities to collect more people. We will probably take the most direct, CA-NV-UT-CO-MO-KS-VA route. For all of you planning on driving get in touch with me so we can meet up along the way, maybe hold some cool actions and press events where you are, and at an intersection with the proposed pipeline.

    My ideas and thoughts:

***Bus coverage for the left coast cities:
I love Ildiko Polony’s idea to organize a veggie bus (which I assume means veggie biodiesel) from San Francisco. There might be sufficient interest from all the left coast cities, that we should have a bus start from the Vancouver area and come down the coast to meet up with us in San Fran, and along the way it could pick up people in Seattle and Portland–or meet up with additional buses starting from those cities if there is sufficient interest, forming a growing caravan! People could arrange additional stops in smaller cities en route. Can we get numbers from the 350.org organizers as to how many people from each city signed up so we are not just guessing whether there is a potential for this much interest?
    Route:
From Google Maps it looks like route 5 would be the obvious route the whole way from Vancouver to San Fran. (But I’ve not yet ever been up north.)

***Hospitality for stopovers across the heartland appreciated:
San Fran to DC is a four-day trip or more. I know from taking Amtrak that sitting nonstop for a few days and nights can be miserable. Also, to many people the burden would be eased by a shower and/or being able to have a nutritious, cooked, vegetarian or vegan meal at some point, hard to obtain while traveling. Are there volunteers to offer people a place to sleep lying down, even if for a short night, and/or to provide use of a shower, and/or to prepare group meals? Would your church be able to help? (I’m sure most riders would be more than happy to chip in a little monetary compensation.)

***Location details for bus starting from Vancouver:
It just might be very wise to have people meet and board the bus on the U.S. side of the border. If border officials wanted to cause difficulties, it would be far less easy for them to identify and stop many separate individuals than a whole busload.

***DC area showers for people staying at St. Stephen’s Church appreciated:
Do we have any arrangements for this? How many people are they housing? Staying in a big group setting is a positive as it can increase solidarity, allowing people to make more friends and support each other logistically (including pickups from local institutions which many of us will find ourselves visiting) and emotionally, which can be important especially for some first-timers. Mingling could of course also be good for general learning exchange and sharing of ideas to take home. But I noticed on http://washingtonpeacecenter.net/masshousing that it says there are no showers, so that is a drawback (unless there is something I am unaware of). Can someone local lend a bunch of buckets and cubicle dividers or such, so large numbers of people can take bucket baths in, say, a parking lot or wherever is available? Does anyone have a better idea? Does someone have a suitable place for people to shower or otherwise get clean and presentable?

***Location details for bus from San Fran:
Bus riders wanting to meet in San Fran might instead want to choose a location just east of the Bay, such as a BART station in Oakland. Why: it might be easier to find a place to park and assemble in the less-congested East Bay, it would avoid hassles of crossing the high-traffic Bay Bridge, and probably many potential riders live in the East Bay too so going into SF would be the wrong direction for them starting out.

***Precautions against identity theft while you are away:
If you have posted any identifying information in this public forum and indicated that you are traveling, it is advisable for your protection that you have a neighbor pick up your mail (stolen mail can be used for identity theft) and preferably keep an eye on your residence to prevent burglaries.

Hi…Andy Burt from Maine…I’m new to using this format and not sure if you got my inquiry about space at your place for August 21-24. I am a 66 year old woman activist on climate change, who’s been working with neighborhoods and congregations in Maine on solutions to climate change. I am coming to DC for the action as I can no longer just be involved in the important local actions here in midcoast Maine and want to make a difference for my 5 grandchildren. I hope to carpool with folks coming from New England.

      • Anonymous

        Hello Andy,

I’m sorry that I didn’t receive your previous request.

I’m already housing Tim Wolcott for aug 21-24 and someone else who asked to stay the last week – but I don’t know which days that covers. … so, that’s two people, and a 3rd person who only wants space for Aug 29.
I put one in my guest rm. and 2 or 3 in living room.

So… I can probably take you in.

Can you sleep on a couch or mattress on the floor?

I have bedding so, no need to bring it.

I charge $5.00/night if you can pay it.

Looking forward to meeting you. I’ll call if/when I get lost, and/or when I have a reasonable estimate of arrival time. I expect to make the drive in 7 hrs or less, so mid-late afternoon on 19th is a decent guess. Do you have a driveway I can park in or is on-street parking the norm? Thanks again.

          Carol Skinner

        • Tamarin50

          Hi Jenefer,

          Hi Jenefer,

I estimate I’ll arrive around 3:30-4:00 PM on the 19th. I will need a place to park the car for the time I’m in DC. Are there any public lots near the Metro stations? What stop is the nearest to your house? Thank you.

          Carol Skinner

            Hello Carol,

I will expect you sometime on Friday afternoon (Aug. 19).

No parking lot near by… but we will find a place for your car.

The nearest Metro Station is in Union Station … which is North of the Capitol building and 6 blks from my house.
There may be a parking roof on top of Union Station … but spaces may be rented. I don’t know. I have never tried to use it. I live in the NE quarter.
            Jenefer

          • Carol Skinner

            Hi Jenefer,

            Thanks. Carol

            Carol,

Yes, that’s near by… and we can investigate when you get here. I’m not sure non-congressional staff can use it…

Hello, I would be very interested in accepting kind offer to house folks. I will be there August 29 evening thru Sept 3rd, leaving late afternoon. I’m flying in and forget which airport, I think National. I’m pretty good with ground transpo and have a good map.

        Dear Molly Gibbs,

So far, I have agreed to house 7 people – spread through the protest days. One person will be here Aug. 29
And so, I can take one more on that date.

        You wrote Aug. 29 – Sept. 3rd.

I think that will be fine. Sorry not confirm exactly, but protests (demonstrations) are uncertain by nature.
August 29 is a Monday … and you say you will arrive in the evening. I will be here.
I offer my guest room (taken for the 29th) and a couch or mattress on my living rm. floor.
        No need to bring bedding.

        I charge $5./ night … because I am poor.

My address: 641 Maryland Ave. NE. My house is 6 blks. East of the Capitol. My phone: 202-546-0940
I hope you will land at National (R. Reagan) airport. It is close to the city. Where are you coming from?
You can take the metro at the airport into town … and I will give you directions from metro stop near Capitol Hill.
I advise you to call/e-mail me when we are close to your arrival date.

Anyone thought about camping? Apparently Cherry Hill Park campsite is close to D.C. and is right next to public transportation to and from downtown. There are showers, too, in case people are concerned with B.O. undermining the collective political persuasiveness.

    CARPOOLS FROM POINTS WEST

Here is a summary of people traveling from the west, grouped by region from the west coast as far as Kentucky. This is solely from me compiling and sorting information I found on this ride board. Some of us in California are looking at organizing a caravan (or at least a carpool so everyone can get there). A caravan would enable us to get media attention and hold press conferences.

NAME, CONTACT INFO, LOCATION OF ORIGIN, DATES

    Vancouver and BC:

Amy, childs.a.b@gmail.com , VANCOUVER, BC, flexible August 29th onwards

Sharon, Port Moody in Lower mainland in Vancouver, Did not mention dates

    Fiona Rayher, frayher@me.com, Vancouver BC , August 29th / 30th

Claregomez , claregomez@shaw.ca, Victoria, British Columbia. I am looking for a ride from either Victoria near Vancouver BC or Seattle

    Portland:

    argrabowski@yahoo.com, Portland , from 17th of August , I have a drivers license.

Barbara Ford and four other women , barbara.e.ford@gmail.com , Portland, Oregon. We will arrive on August 27th, and plan to leave for home on the 31st.

    California:

Corey, SF Bay Area, phone (IV)(I)(V)-(II)00-(VII)(IX)(III)0. I have a car.

    Ildiko, ildiko@berkeley.edu or 415 559 7482, SF Bay Area

Shaunajo2002 , just south of San Francisco.

Sara_Schedler , Sara_Schedler@yahoo.com and cell (510) 384-4954, Friends of the Earth San Francisco office, I plan to arrive on August 22nd and stay through until the end– Sept. 3rd.

Prema, lunainside [at] gmail [dot] com. Arcata, CA, Flexible about dates

Ninjatreehugger , CA Central Valley (Chico) , Preferably before the end of August

    Arizona, Utah, Colorado:

Will Greene , twitter: williambgreene , wbgreene@asu.edu , preferably leaving late Aug. 18th, arriving in D.C., then headed back early on Aug. 22nd back to AZ

Lindsy Floyd , Salt Lake City, UT. I want to be in D.C. from August 20th to…whenever will get be home by the 27th. could provide Land Rover (12mpg on highway),

Cindymcfadden87 , Telluride Colorado , Dates are open at thus time

    Alberta, Montana:

Bill Cook , bcook54@hotmail.com , MT, I plan to participate with events on Aug. 20th through Aug. 24th. I have room for one more, or I can park my truck in your drive and take a seat in your vehicle.

xtophermcmillan-at-gmail-dot-com, Alberta and I can get to many places close by (BC,Saskatchewan,Montana,Washington etc..)

    Saskatchewan, South Dakota, Texas, Missouri:

Dianne Rhodes , dianner@hotmail.com , Saskatchewan Canada. I will be flying and need a bed (of sorts) for about 5 days starting about Aug 25 th.

JessicaLynnAvery, jessicalynnavery@yahoo.com, or give me a jingle at (605) 472-0326 , northeastern south dakota , Did not mention dates

Daniel Zellman , danielzellman [at] gmail or 512.293.9315., Austin, TX, . I don’t have firm dates yet — will happily work around your schedule. “Hey Cindy and Jessica, Maybe we could all meet in KS City, MO…? “

Cbovinet , looking for a ride from STL [Saint Louis, MO?] area to D.C. and housing in D.C. will be there from 19th-21st. [Not sure what this means. Is she in STL these dates? Wants to be in DC these dates?]

Matt Leonard — Not sure if you are already plugged in to this – but the Rising Tide Climate Convergence is happening in St. Louis a few days prior. I think a bunch of folks from there are coming to DC, and you could likely organize a caravan. http://convergence2011.org/

Kait Mauro will be at the above convergence in STL

Paula Reed , between Joplin and Springfield, Missouri. Dates open.

    Kentucky:

Samuelavery and 6 or 8 other people from Louisville KY. Samuelavery@gmailcom , We’re thinking about the Aug 27 to 31 time frame, but this could change.

  • Reynold Reimer

Looking for a place for my wife and I to sleep from approx. Aug. 24 to Aug. 31. We’re old enough to be grandparents but not too old to see which way the winds blow. We don’t have a lot of money but can pay a little. Would prefer to be near public transit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=725658833 Steve Liptay

Anyone driving up from San Antonio or Austin, TX or nearby? I’m hoping to be in DC for the 20th — 27th or there about… can split the cost of gas if anyone is making the drive…

    • C.

Steve, I am compiling a listing of people by region. You can find the full list in a long post on this ride board called CARPOOLS FROM POINTS WEST. There was talk of Daniel from Austin meeting up with people in Kansas City, MO. There may also be a larger-scale caravan coming from California and other areas to converge as we move east, holding press conferences (including where we cross the pipeline route) and visiting Tim DeChristopher if there is enough interest. If you would like to be included on group emails about carpooling and caravaning, get in touch with me or Ildiko at ildiko.polony@gmail.com . –Corey

Here is the guy from Austin:

Daniel Zellman , danielzellman [at] gmail or 512.293.9315., Austin,
      TX,

      • Bohemianouveau07

I’d be willing to share cost of fuel for anyone too if I can get a ride. I’m coming from So. AZ. Depending on when you want to leave, I’ll probably be coming from Tucson, AZ. You can email me @ bohemianouveau07@hotmail.com

  • Diana April

still looking for a rideshare/place to stay in DC through the dates of aug 28/29-31. It will be myself and my 11 year old son, Tobi. He’s housetrained, quite well indeed, I promise! and people trained, and climate-change-trained, and 350.org trained!

    • Mollygibbs3

I can report that I will be arriving on the 29th, in the evening and staying thru Sept 3, leave in the late afternoon. I will need help with a place to stay, and hopefully on or near the subway for easy transportation downtown. Diana, I’d be happy to join forces with you and your son! I see there is a park to camp in, not sure how far it is to where we will be at the White House, but I wasn’t planning to bring a sleeping bag/tent…I’m coming from Olympia WA via Madison. Stay in touch if you hear something, and I will also. Friend I will see Friday knows DC well, and she may have a suggestion. If a few of us go together on a place, we could stay at a place in Dupont Circle with a kitchen, right by a Trader Joe’s. Lemme know, we’d need 3 adults and your son to make that work financially….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wits-End/100002383345709 Wit’s End

I am signed up to go. On the other hand I am very uncomfortable with this portion of the original letter from the organizers:

“We will, each day, march on the White House, risking arrest with our trespass. We will do it in dignified fashion, demonstrating that in this case we are the conservatives, and that our foes—who would change the composition of the atmosphere are dangerous radicals. Come dressed as if for a business meeting—this is, in fact, serious business.
And another sartorial tip—if you wore an Obama button during the 2008 campaign, why not wear it again? We very much still want to believe in the promise of that young Senator who told us that with his election the ‘rise of the oceans would begin to slow and the planet start to heal.’”

Ironically in the next paragraph, they laud Tim DeChristophers “creative” protest, then go on to say:

“Now it’s time for people who’ve spent their lives pouring carbon into the atmosphere to step up too, just as many of us did in earlier battles for civil rights or for peace. Most of us signing this letter are veterans of this work, and we think it’s past time for elders to behave like elders. One thing we don’t want is a smash up: if you can’t control your passions, this action is not for you.”

I don’t recall the civil rights and or peace battles being reserved for people dressed for a business meeting. I understand they don’t want a “smash up” but that is a far cry from telling people they can’t wear t-shirts with slogans, costumes, or otherwise display their opinions through their choice of clothing.

I would be very interested in other peoples’ opinions because I am honestly in a quandary. Usually when I take the time and spend the money – and it’s considerable – to travel to DC and protest administration policy, the corporatocracy etc., I think it’s a good idea to get the point home visually.

    Hi, all.

Some transportation options from most atmosphere-saving to most
    atmosphere-destroying:

small car with 5 occupants (four riders plus driver):
0.032 kg CO2 per km per passenger (One-fifth of the per-car value below.)
(0.052 kg CO2 per mile per passenger)

    long-distance bus (e.g. Greyhound):
0.05 kg CO2 per km per passenger
(0.08 kg CO2 per mile per passenger)

    Canadian intercity rail:
0.103 kg CO2 per km per passenger
(0.166 kg CO2 per mile per passenger)

    flying:
0.12 kg CO2 per km per passenger
(0.19 kg CO2 per mile per passenger)

    small car with solo driver:
0.16 kg CO2 per km per CAR (The per-passenger # equals the per-car # in this case.)
(0.26 kg CO2 per mile per CAR)

    Amtrak (US intercity rail):
0.195 kg CO2 per km per passenger
(0.314 kg CO2 per mile per passenger)

I looked up these data and was very surprised to find that Amtrak is
very high-emission (far worse than rail in UK or Canada) and in fact
may be worse than flying. Amtrak’s number may be very approximate as they have gone through some infrastructure
changes and had some inconsistent reporting over the years (according to
    http://www.cnt.org/repository/HighSpeedRailEmissions.pdf if you’re
interested). So if you get a more up-to-date and accurate number
(called an emission factor), then totally feel free to share. Also, I
guess if they had more riders it would in the long term
bring the number down as it is a per-passenger number (as opposed to,
    say, per-train).

    How I did this:
I took the numbers from a spreadsheet published by the World Resources Institute, which was a companion to their May 2006 publication “Hot Climate, Cool Commerce: A Service Sector Guide to Greenhouse Gas Management.” I looked into the Amtrak number because it surprised me, leading to the explanation above. (Sadly, it is not a typo.) I could not, in the time I had, find a more updated version from the WRI, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

    http://www.wri.org

The number for the 5-occupant vehicle, I calculated by simply dividing the per-car numbers by 5.

The spreadsheet provides other emission factors, for example larger vehicles such as SUV’s. I can email it to you if you are interested.

    Corey

    • Tamarin50

I’m driving a Honda Civic, low emission vehicle but have no riders so far. I’m leaving NE Ohio (Chesterland) early AM 8/19. Anyone interested in cost- and carbon-sharing? (Corey?)

  • Jerome Wagner

Hi! I’m Jerome Wagner (male; 53). Looking for a floor to crash on and bathroom to shower in for the nights of 8/21 thru 8/23 and 8/31 thru 9/3 (plus or minus). Within reach of mass transit is needed, especially for the 2nd block of time. Willing to chip in some cash…

  • Richard Van Aken

Planning on leaving the 18th from outside Northeast Philly. Have room, it will be tight, for two passengers. My plan is to camp somewhere near a metro station and ride the train into D.C. if possible. If I can’t get near a station I’ll look for the shortest drive to a station from outside the city proper. The tent is capable of sleeping three comfortably. I’ll be staying from the 18th to the 24th returning on the 30th and staying to the 2nd. Anyone interested contact Rich at candyo_1@juno.com

    • http://twitter.com/PaxLupo Pax Lupo

For camping near the metro there is the Greenbelt National Park $16 per night, no electricity, and the Cherry Hill Campground, $45 per night w/ electricity.

I’ll be at Greenbelt from the 26th ->

  • Eric McDevitt

I live way over in Laramie, WY if anyone is coming through this area and is willing to take on a passenger I would really appreciate it; as a student I can’t afford transportation of my own but I really want to attend this protest because its so important, I can help pay expenses. please email me at emcdevit@uwyo.edu.

  • Haloc001

Hello! Anyone coming down from/through the Baltimore area?

I’d love to catch a ride with you. I will not have an independent ride :(

I’m a friendly, understanding and mature student. I will be attending on September 3rd so we would need to go down in the early evening/afternoon of September 2nd for training. I’m willing to stay at the or somewhere else.

Also, does anyone here have experience with these types of events where we are risking potential legal/police action? What should I expect? I’m coming despite the risk, but I am young and new to this.

Hey Halo, I’m in baltimore and also don’t have a car, I was thinking about taking the Amtrak, its pretty affordable and fast.

I volunteer to organize a caravan from Florida up I-95 through Jacksonville, and/or I-75 through Atlanta to Washington DC.

Fill out the form at http://notarsandscaravan.org/ and we will work out our caravan from the South according to your needs and availability of cars.

Incidentally I just checked with Hotwire and they have cars in Orlando for $10.95 per day, which comes to $20/day with tax and fees. I plan to rent and save wear and tear on my old clunker. Happy to have help with the rental.

Hey all, I’m trying to figure a way to get back from DC to upstate New York (greater Ithaca/Binghamton/Syracuse area is fine) late the 22nd or early the 23rd. Is anyone planning on driving back up that way at that point with an empty seat, or is anyone interested in sharing the cost of a rental car or something? I’d be happy to make detours if upstate NY isn’t exactly your destination, but the cost for rentals one way looks like about $200, and I can’t do that alone.

I live in a group house of young 20-somethings in Capitol hill, I could have one or two low key people maybe stay w me after aug 22.

I posted this earlier, but this list is getting quite long and wading through might be difficult. My wife and I are leaving western Pennsylvania on August 19 and will return on the 23 or 24. We can accommodate up to 2 people in our Yaris (tiny). Get in touch if you need a ride ( mbagdes@embarqmail.com )

I know this is kind of late for the action, but I will be driving to DC from western New Hampshire somewhere around September 1-3… exact date still TBA, but if I find someone to ride with me I will pinpoint a more exact date. I can take 1 or 2 other people with me and my awesome dog.

Heading to Detroit after the action, so I can also offer a ride to someone from DC to Detroit somewhere around Sept 5-7-ish.

Email me at allaspiaggia AT gmail dot com if you’d like to ride with me either dates.

I have a couch/living room that could comfortably house a few people that know each other. I live in Baltimore, which is a quick ride away, although I don’t own a car so I’m considering either biking to DC or taking the Amtrak, depending on how confident I’m feeling with my cycling abilities.

Anybody interested, the living room is available, ian.logsdon@gmail.com or call 410-215-7079

  • Mary Bolton

Can contact me fir emergency couch space from aug 20 to 23 and from aug 30 to the 3rd of September if need be. I will be attending the action and will help a couple of folks if I can. Email is Mary.Bolton@Comcast.net. Am also checking with friends about more space. Peace and greenup!!!! Mary bolton

  • Maria Ggn

This is crazy and way too time consuming. You could use discussion pages on facebook ( every page has them ) or u could set up something with headings and let people comment back. A heading for rooming, another heading for rides would be a good start!

Thanks for organizing the info! It would be sweet if it had links to people’s contact too, but I don’t know if that’s possible.

I’d like to add that I have a ride for 3 leaving from Bloomington, IN 47401 on August 19th, but I will need people to share driving so we can arrive by morning.

    • ASC

Thanks for putting this ride/housing share info together.!!

I would like to find a ride to DC.
I am close to either Calgary Alberta, Canada, or Whitefish Montana.
I would love to meet up with anyone who plans on traveling to DC from this area, and I can travel to meet up with you if necessary. I am not really sure what dates I can go since, I’ll have to skip work to do this? Basically I’d like to go to DC whenever the ride I find is going. Obviously I will contribute gas $$ to help out.

against my better judgement, here is my email address,
      andycagle@hotmail.com

would love to meet up with some folks making the trip over. I am only about 4 hours from Missoula Montana, so anyone driving from Seattle or Portland would likely be driving through Missoula.

Hi, we’re looking for housing for three (including one teenager). We’re arriving Aug. 20 and leaving the 25th. Housing for even some of that time would be hugely helpful to us. Thank you. Sarah

      • Barbara

I found a hostel-type place called D.C.Trekker not far from St.Stephen’s Church that charges less than $80 a night for a shared room. Private rooms are 80 a night. A good place to start looking for accomodations is the William Penn House which is run by the Quakers. A woman from there e-mailed me a list of less expensive places for activists. Code Pink also had a link with various places to stay. You’ll find something, I’m sure.

Helenpat, I’m driving from Charlottesville to St. Stephen’s Church. Where do I park for Thurs. – Fri. nights, 8/25-8/26? One idea is to ask you if I can park at your house? There are probably garages near the dhurch, but I don’t know that. Frances

A suggestion about housing: my “home church” in Washington, though I’ve lived in CT for years, is Westmoreland Congregational Church (United Church of Christ), Years ago my (then) affinity group stayed there when we were in DC for a Reagan protest, It’s a wonderful liberal church, environmentally conscious and welcoming. It’s located on Westmoreland Circle on the DC/Maryland line- for transportatiion a straight shot into downtown DC.

I’m scheduled to train 9/21 5-9 pm. Parking is a hassle in DC, so metro is lesser of evils. Camping is $8 (senior) at GNP–I’d rather contribute to your favorite cause.

I’ve got bedroll & pad. so floorspace is fine!

Hey all! Is anyone traveling from the Pacific NW? I’m in Eugene and will gladly pay my fair share of gas, etc. if anyone is driving from this area – or if traveling via plane or train, I’d love to coordinate flight/train schedules! If not, I’ll probably just go it alone, but I’d rather not – it’d be such a better experience to travel with others :) Thanks and hope to see y’all in DC!

    Zack, thanks for the compilation.
Until recently, I had been undecided about my action day. It is now on the Interfaith Day of Action on 8/29, with training on Sunday, 8/28.
I am traveling from Tucson, can drive (an old model 2003 Prius for minimized carbon footprint), and would like to make the trip as quickly, yet safely and legally as practical.
With four legal drivers, we can make it in two days comfortably, with three, in three days.
    interested? awaiting response from bohemianouveau07@hotmail.com

Who is going from the Boston area. Could we put together a bus load or carpool? I am going from Billerica, and have a somewhat flexible schedule. I MUST be home on 8/23 and 8/30. I would prefer being home on the 27th.

    • Jemel7

Hi – has there been any update on a bus from boston?

      • Anonymous

No – not the last time that I looked.

  • David

Hello Folks, I will be taking the bus from Vancouver, BC, Canada to DC. Because I am concerned about being bounced at the border I plan on entering the USA by heading south to Seattle first. Then, if I’m not let in, I won’t have bussed 3000 miles to find out. This means three and a half days on a Greyhound each way. I may be so dog tired by the time I get to Denver that a shower and bed will be welcome. Across Canada I have many places to couch-surf. I don’t use credit cards; without them hotels can be fussy. If there is anyone in Denver who might put up a 59 year-old grumpy but house-broken male for a night that would be swell. Email: dvdclausen[ at ]yahoo[ dot ]com.

    Cheers, and thanks.

Hello all – safehouse and support team request!

My dear cohorts in this climate action adventure,

I wanted to express how amazing you all are for putting efforts out there and taking steps one by one to make a difference. Not only do I appreciate you, but my son as well, which is why I’m creating this thread.

Tobi, 11 yrs old, is an aware, conscious, and responsible young man. Although I believe true to my heart that his presence for the DC action sit-in will make a huge impact on politicians and supporters of the Tarsands Pipeline, I am concerned that, in the case in which we are arrested, his welfare is at stake, as well as my ability to nurture that welfare. Although I am completely and thoroughly prepared for arrest (including bail $$, court issues, attorneys, etc.), I am hoping that if this situation were to arise, I can find a safehouse for him during the period in which he can be cared for. He is very independent, needing only a book to keep him happy, and will be willing to do your dishes, household chores, etc. if he feels safe and confident that his mother will have taken the precautionary steps to ensure his whereabouts and comfort. I am willing to compensate for any time that he will need with someone who can provide his well-being if the situation should arise.

To the point: Can one person, be it a support team member in DC, or another member of our group who will be present but not “arrestable” during our sit-in be available for the above? I would love to know that our efforts are not just for ourselves, but for our future generations, and theirs as well, during this action. Thank you in advance!

    with love,
    Diana April, Tobi’s mom!

I’ve been taking the metrobus then Pentagon metro every morning at 8:30 and arriving at the White House a little before 10. Hello Folks, I arrived on bus to Toronto, Ontario from Vancouver BC only to learn that Greyhound isn’t going south in the near-enough future to complete my trip to DC in time for the training and protest. I’ve been couch surfing in the Big Smoke waiting for better news. I’m going to Ottawa to spread my burden to other kin, and it occurred to me that maybe I could cadge a ride in a private car. If anyone is leaving from Ottawa to DC in the next day or two and has a seat I’d love to hear, David Clausen: 604 681 0666.

    Hey!

Is there anybody leaving for Washington from Ottawa in the next day or 2?

If you have spare room in your vehicle and would be willing to share the cost of gas to get there please consider taking me along with you!

I’m an environmental activist from Ottawa. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it down to Washington earlier in the month and though time is running out I still have high hopes to find somebody to help me get there.

If you can help me get there or know of somebody to put me in contact with to get there, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. my email is kevegan.donaghy@gmail.com and my phone number is (613) 513-8070.

    Fingers crossed

I will not be able to attend the night before program but would love to come up to dc to support the action. Is anyone else attending the protest for the last day Sept. 3rd coming up from Richmond or further south in NC or even Fredericksburg?

Sorry to be late in appearing. I didn’t learn about ringing the White House on 11/06/11 until I read the piece about Bill McKibbon in Rolling Stone. I’m in Santa Fe NM. I’d like to participate. I can’t afford it, which is why I hope to find people to ride with and housing in D.C. I drive a Honda van that might make it, and with riders to help with expenses I might try. Can interested parties contact me at rpcovelli@yahoo.com?
