Tar Sands Action Goes Nationwide

News — admin September 15, 2011 at 3:42 pm

This is the week that Tar Sands Action broke out from its White House beachhead–the week this protest went nationwide.

Tar Sands Action rallies have greeted President Obama at every single public appearance he’s made since Labor Day weekend – and many more are in the works. The President will likely be making a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline by the end of the year – so we really need to keep up the pressure for the next couple of months.

Rallies led by Tar Sands Action arrestees have greeted President Obama in Richmond, Virginia, Columbus, Ohio and Raleigh, North Carolina. They’re joined by an action on Harvard’s campus targeting Obama 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina, and another action tomorrow at an appearance by Vice President Biden in Delaware.

Protests like these are critical: it’s a chance to reach the President directly and the national media who travel with him. If you know of a Presidential event near you, let us know right away by emailing us at tarsandsaction@gmail.com so we can help you put together a Tar Sands Action rally.

But that’s not all. Tar Sands Action arrestees have been holding dozens of meetups in their communities to discuss the action in DC, and what’s next for the movement. These events are critical for building relationships that will take our movement to the next level. To find an event near you, and to connect with other folks in your community about the Tar Sands Action, click here: http://events.tarsandsaction.org/meetup/

I’ve been totally overwhelmed by what we’ve been able to accomplish in just a few short weeks since the action ended. Let’s keep this momentum going.

Go Tar Sand Activists! As the saying goes: May heaven bless your noble endeavors and keep you safe from harm. Your demonstrations are more important than anyone can imagine. The Arctic Circle is hovering around 32 degrees in the summer. As the sea ice disappears, the water warms up. As the water warms up, it raises the temperatures in the Arcitc. This speeds up the thawing of the permafrost. Trillions of tons of methane and CO2 are about to escape into the atmosphere. The permafrost on the ocean floor is leaking like a sieve now. Lakes created by the thawing permafrost are producing methane like a land fill. As the atmosphere heats up the feed back cycle begins. The oceans warm. The oceans water circulation slows and water becomes stagnet. Life in the top half of the ocean dies from the acid and the heat and falls to the bottom half. Microbes eat the remains and produce methane and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide and methane escape into the air and extinguishes every living thing on the planet. This includes humans, animals, insects and plants. This is a scenairo suggested by Dr Peter Ward in his book:” Under a Green Sky”. It is a real education reading this book. It is the first time I contemplated that climate change could lead to extinction.
The tar sand project uses 800 million cubic feet of natural gas every day just to get the tar sands processed to put into the pipe lines. This is 10% of what Canada uses in a year. This would probably triple with the Keyustone pipe lin in operation. Dr. Hansen says the total project would most likely raise the CO2 ppm 200 points. This is disaster with the temperature in the Arctic Circle at 32 degrees. The temperature in the Arctic could be in the forties in the next ten years. The sea ice could be gone by 2013 to 2019.
So you see, you are fighting for the lives of about 7 billion people right now and the lives of all the animals, insects and plants. We must win this fight.

I just received a robocall from “art int srv” at 202.643.1953 touting the pipeline and asking if they could add my name among supporters to pass along to the Department of State. I said No, but it would not take no for an answer. Over and over I said no, a thousand time no, but it kept blathering until I hung up. I wonder how that will get reported?

I agree 100% with our TAR SANDS PROTESTING ACTION taken. I am fed up with the government sealing deals with a hand shake on television. This hand shake represents an agreement for funds to be allocated his Presidential Campaign from the mega corp whose pockets are being lined w/cash. This is BULL..What happened to representing the people and being voted on my the people.
