Tomorrow: Top Tar Sands Lobbyist Visits the White House

Tomorrow one of the top lobbyists for the the Keystone XL oil pipeline will be meeting President Barack Obama in the White House.

This particular lobbyist gets special access for one reason only: because he also happens to be the Prime Minister of Canada. Prime Minister Harper will technically be in town for a “state visit”, but we know from multiple sources that Keystone XL and the tar sands will be high on his agenda when he meets Obama.¹

So we’re mobilizing to greet Prime Minister Harper just as we would any other lobbyist for dirty oil: with a fired up crowd, chants, banners, and a crystal-clear message. Which is to say: a BIG rally is planned at the Canadian Embassy Wednesday at 10:30 to 11:30 am, and you should come join the fun.

Harper has a big say in the long term future of the tar sands, and it’s critical that we send him a message that we will continue to work to stop Keystone XL and any other tar sands project. Can you make it tomorrow?

One of the main reasons that we were able to score a temporary victory against the Keystone XL pipeline was because we made sure that people were waiting to greet President Obama with banners and chants everywhere he went. He knew that the movement to stop the Keystone XL pipeline was widespread and deeply committed.

Now, we need to show the same commitment for Prime Minister Harper. Our friends at the Chesapeake Climate Action Network and the Sierra Club are taking the lead in organizing the rally, and will be bringing a giant, 20-foot banner that says “Canada: We Don’t Want Your Dirty Oil!”

All you need to bring is yourself and hopefully a friend or two. So take an early lunch and join a great crew at the Canadian Embassy tomorrow — it’s a vital moment to keep the pressure on.

If there’s anything that Harper hates, it’s bad press. If you can get any pics and post them it would be much appreciated. The forums up here in Canada are filled with Harper cons because he’s larded the media spin with 1,500 people who troll the message boards to make fun of global warming, that He has a majority ( he doesn’t – 25% voted him in). Many Canadians didn’t vote due to disappointment with our situation and look at the result – a fascist dictator bent on deregulation, environmental degradation and a complete sellout to big corporations. In truth, I’ve never seen such an odious ideologue.

  Wow. Take off the tin-foil hat, partner. My guess is that Canada, like most democratic countries, will move back and forth along the political spectrum from election cycle to election cycle, and everything will unfold as it always has. Harper is no better or worse than Chretien, Trudeau, or Mulroney, and we somehow survived all those. Where was all the vitriol for Chretien when he signed on to Kyoto and then refused to do anything about it? He, being the master politician that he is, simply passed the problem on to his successors. But Harper is the odious ideologue, a fascist dictator bent on environmental degradation? Someone once said that name-calling is the last resort in a lost argument, and this seems to fit in your case.

This news article needs some serious push back, especially since it’s written by Ezra Levant, author of “Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada’s Oil Sands”. He needs to get his facts straight re the Gitxsan amongst other things.

Please don’t vilify all Canadians with signs that say Canada we don’t want your dirty oil. It’s not Canadians who want to export that dirty shit. It’s our corrupt politicians who are the puppets of oil companies and pipeline companies like TransCanada. As a Canadian, it makes me physically sick to be represented by Harper and his right wing cronies. Please, focus your attacks not on Canada or average Canadians like me. Go after our corrupt leaders.
